Mary Agnes
Kartchner
Sep 8, 1942 — Oct 8, 2026
Mary Agnes Douglass Kartchner danced into eternity Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, with family by her side in Mesa, Arizona.
Mary was the oldest daughter of three girls of Ralph Arthur Douglass and Lula Agnes Furtado. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Eugene Kartchner; parents Ralph and Lula Douglass; sister-in-law, Eva Joyce Ward; brother-in-law, Ronald Kartchner; stepdaughter, Gena Ann Rova; son, Ralph Arthur Kartchner; stepson, David Eugene Kartchner; and great-granddaughter, Harlee Rea Dawn Kennedy.
Mary was born Sept. 8, 1942 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California. She recently celebrated her 84th birthday week, with lots of visits from her beloved family of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends who visited her while she was trying to get better from a turn of poor health.
When she was quite young her daddy served in World War II. After dad came back from the war she became a big sister to 2 sisters. She grew up happy, climbing trees and riding horses on her grandpa's ranch and on her property in Huachuca city, AZ. She was the granddaughter of Brainard and Henrietta Douglass, who donated livestock to Hollywood films. She was really good with firearms, she would "shoot flies off the fence posts".
At an early age she was ran over by a car by just the front tires of a vehicle. When her dad started screaming and approaching the driver, the driver panicked and reversed back over her, which was probably the start to a lifetime of back problems.
When she became a young adult she was asked to serve a mission, She told the bishop she needed to think about it, went home and packed her bags and left town. After going to some school and dilly-dallying around she came back thinking she was too old to serve. She told the bishop, "If the LORD still wants me to go, I'll go.", hoping the bishop would say she was too old, well he didn't. He immediately stood up and started grabbing papers to her dismay. But the dismay soon turned to overwhelming excitement, love and passion for not only her mission, but for her Heavenly Father and her Savior, Jesus Christ. She served in the Bolivia mission speaking Spanish, which helped her in translating and reading through her Portuguese ancestry.
Mary then came home from her mission did more schooling and became a teacher, specializing in special needs.
She was a loyal member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With teaching primary being one of her favorite callings.
She was married to the love of her life, Vernon Eugene Kartchner, in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on Dec. 12,1980.
They lived in Taylor, AZ for years.
In 1996 they moved to Heber, AZ to build a house.
In 2006, she got to serve another mission as a couple with her husband, Eugene, in Salt Lake City, Utah. When they returned from their mission they also returned to their home in Taylor.
They were married nearly 38 years, before he passed away in 2018.
Mary enjoyed working hard on her genealogy, family history, survival, gardening, animals, learning, education and dancing. She loved to dance. She had her struggles with computers, technology and anything mechanical, even the TV remote. She always had kids, or grandkids helping her fix her TV or computer. And her love/hate relationship with passwords was almost comical.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Julianna Marie Casemira (Mark) Weeks; sisters, Louanne Irene (Gary) Kirkman and Georgetta Ralynn "Linnie" (Ron) Squire; sister-in-law, Lois Gayle Whiting; sister-in-law, Karen Cluff Kartchner and family; stepdaughter-in-law, Sherri Moore; stepson, Leslie Ray (Linda); Grandchildren: Felisha (Jayson) Hurst; Crystal (Adam) Smith; William "Billy" (Kymbrianne) Rova; Dillon Rova; Richard (Nicole) Kartchner; Freeman (Fallon) Kartchner; Dale Sai Michael Kartchner; Brandon Kartchner; Jared Allen Eugene and Drake Sean Mahonri Weeks. Her great grandchildren are: Katelynn Jean, Amelia Ann, Preston Jayson, Brinlee Makelle, Conner Merrit Hurst; Alayah, Cannon, Rockwell, Roman Smith; Brogan, Kreelyn Rova; Chaelee Jo, McKena Jean, Freeman James Kartchner; Quentin Richard, Brielle Elizabeth, Reed Vernon, Gage David Kartchner; Ryder Eugene Sai.
She was truly a fantastic, righteous and stalwart woman. She was a great mother and grandmother. She had great love for everyone she came in contact with, no matter who or where they came from. She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her; Sisters, kids, grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and those who claimed her as a sister, a mother and grandmother.
