It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather, Dr. John Duane Jones. Dr. Jones passed away on October 22, 2022 at Mercy Gilbert Hospital after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Loretta, 6 children, 1 foster daughter, 19 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Dr. Jones was born on May 23, 1939 in Douglas, Arizona. He later attended Glendale High School, Arizona State University, and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of California in San Francisco. In a career that spanned 54 years, he not only treated tens of thousands of patients in his busy private practice, but he was also a prominent member of the professional orthodontic community. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontist, the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics, and the Arizona Orthodontic Study Group. He was a member of the Southwest component of the Angle Society where he was president from 1987 – 1989. He was also on the craniofacial team at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix for 33 years where he treated hundreds of children with cleft lips, cleft palates and other craniofacial anomalies as part of that team. At the time of his death he was still practicing in the Valley, and also was the clinic director and interim program director at UCLA School of Orthodontics where he commuted two days a week. He taught in the clinic for over 20 years, and won numerous Clinical Educator of the Year awards.
He also served in the U.S. Army for 2 years, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He served as the orthodontist for the military families stationed there, and also pursued his lifelong love of hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. He was a proud and patriotic American and loved his country.
In his personal life, Dr. Jones was a very active father, coaching his children’s sports teams and serving in various positions in the Boy Scouts of America, eventually being awarded the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth. He was a lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many callings in that organization, working and teaching in both the youth programs and the adult organizations.
We, as a family, will miss him greatly and we will be forever grateful for his service and commitment to us as well as to his community.
